a mold buildup on the white ceiling

What do I do if my ceiling has water damage?

Water damage can cause a whole host of problems for your home and your health. If your ceiling is stained, peeling, or cracked, there are a few things that you can do to help prevent further damage from happening and the situation from spiraling out of control.

Get the leak under control.

First, you need to determine where the water damage occurred. What caused the leak in the first place? Move all valuables away from the area to prevent additional damage to your belongings. Then, place a bucket or tarp under the area to catch any leaking water. Most ceilings have a layer of drywall underneath of them, which means that drywall is either absorbing or dispersing the water elsewhere. To help minimize the damage, create a hole in the ceiling to allow the water to drain into the bucket.

Track down the problem and repair it.

Water can travel quite a distance from where the initial leak occurred. Roof leaks are one of the hardest to isolate. While you might think the source of the leak is obvious, it could fool you in no time. It could be anything from a leaking drain, missing caulk, or loose supply line. The best way to get to the bottom of the problem is to call in a water damage company who is trained to get to the bottom of the problem quickly. This will help ensure nothing is missed and the repair is done properly the first time around.

Dry out the area.

After the problem has been located, it’s important that you dry everything out properly to ensure mold doesn’t have the chance to form in the area. All of the affected materials need to be thoroughly dried out. While minor leaks might dry out on their own, a larger leak isn’t going to be as easy to work with and will probably require some extra help.

Let the restoration begin.

Now that everything is properly cleaned, repaired, and dried, you can begin restoring the damage to your home. Depending on the size and type of leak, the repair needed will vary. With a professional water damage company on the job, you won’t have to worry about anything being missed or rushed. They will take the time to ensure every part of the job is done correctly to help protect your home.
